6 Halloween Treats that Are Better than Candy
Spooky season is here and so is the endless supply of Halloween candy. Despite their small or “fun” size, those calories can add up quickly. The good news is there are ways to satisfy your candy cravings while keeping your weight-management goals on track – and it doesn’t involve casting a spell or a midnight sacrifice. The next time your sweet tooth comes knocking for treat, trick it with one of these scary good alternatives.
Peanut Butter Cup Shake
Peanut butter cups are the most popular Halloween candy in the United States. Instead of unwrapping one of those cups, grab a shaker cup and make a shake! This liquid copycat allows you to enjoy the chocolate and peanut butter flavor you love, without the guilt. Get the recipe here.
Turn Halloween into date night – literally! These dried pieces of fruit may not look like much, but they’re naturally sweet and have a rich, caramel taste. For a salty sweet combo, slice the dates down the middle, remove the stone and stuff them with nut butter. Enjoy them as is or frozen.
Apple and nut butter slices get a spooky makeover with these Apple Monsters. To make these terrifying treats, quarter green apples and slice off the core and seeds. Next, cut out a V shape into the center of the apple quarter. (This is the monster’s mouth.) Spread a thin layer of nut butter into the mouth and press pumpkin or sunflower seeds along the edge to form teeth.
Here’s something that will give your sweet tooth the chills: frozen fruit! Freeze grapes and call them "eyeballs." You can eat them on their own or add them to a beverage for a fun garnish.
For a more creative frozen treat, make banana ghost or banana mummy popsicles. For banana ghosts, cut a banana in half and insert a popsicle stick. Add two mini chocolate chips for the eyes and freeze for at least 30 minutes or overnight. Follow the same process for mummies, but drizzle with peanut butter that's been heated in the microwave for 30 to 45 seconds to create "bandages."
Make your favorite smoothie with milk, protein powder, and fruit, and pour into popsicle molds. Use Formula 1 Orange Cream for Orange Scream-sicles or Formula 1 Mint Chocolate for monster or zombie pops. You can also layer Formula 1 Orange Cream, Piña Colada and French Vanilla to create candy corn popsicles.
